Welcome from Chairman Martin Reid

Hello, my name is Martin Reid and I serve as Chairman of the Rensselaer County Legislature. I am looking forward to working with The Record to use this blog to stay in touch with residents on county events. I also plan on updating residents about some of the people, places and things that make our county such a great place to live and work.

The Legislature includes 19 members, elected from across the county. There are six legislative districts in the Legislature, and our duties are as prescribed by the County Charter. Those duties include review and consideration of the county budget, consideration of county financial transactions and contracts, some personnel matters, funding for needed county services, oversight of certain county services and handling of constituent matters.

We also participate in some economic development projects, with the Legislature utilizing the county Sewer District, which is in the oversight of the Legislature, to help expand Regeneron Pharmaceuticals in East Greenbush, creating 300 new jobs.

Serving as Chairman has been an honor, and the past three and a half years as chairman have been challenging, exciting and rewarding. As a boy, I became interested in public service watching my father, Dr. John Reid, serve the public as county Health commissioner and coroner and my work as Chairman allows me to give back to a county that means a great deal to me and my family.

That is a quick overview, with more to come in future posts. Along with this blog, residents can learn more about the Legislature at www.rensselaercounty.org. Thank you.
