The Rensselaer County Legislature organized for the new 2014-2017 term during our organizational meeting on a snowy January 2 evening. County Court Judge Debra Young braved the conditions to administer the oath of office to legislators, and Deputy County Clerk Paul Santandera brought the oath book to allow legislators to register their oaths of office.
The organizational meeting also includes the election of officers. I am grateful to have been elected to serve as Chairman, and very appreciative the election for chairman was unanimous. Serving as legislative chairman during the past four years has been an honor, and I look forward to working with all legislators to make the coming term a success.
Along with election as chairman, the Legislature chose to keep the same leadership team as the past four years. Stan Brownell of Hoosick will continue to serve as Vice Chairman, Phil Danaher as Vice Chairman for Finance, Ken Herrington as Majority Leader and Peter Grimm as Minority Leader. The organizational meeting was also the first meeting for three legislators elected to serve during the 2013 elections, including Leonard Welcome of Troy, Rob Bayly of Poestenkill and Todd Tesman of Pittstown.
The past legislative term was successful, with Rensselaer County one of the few counties in upstate to remain under the statewide tax cap. Important county services were maintained despite a rough economy and the Legislature played an important role in assisting in the expansion of Regeneron and the creation of 300 new jobs. We are excited about some of the economic development projects on the horizon in 2014. We are also equally committed to protecting the county services our residents rely on, the freedoms enjoyed everyday, and resolving constituent issues that arise during the new year.
The regular monthly meetings of the Legislature will continue to be held the second Tuesday of each month, except when there is a conflict in September due to primaries. Residents can visit www.rensselaercounty.org for news and updates and I will regularly update this page to keep residents informed. Happy New Year!
